INFANT MORTALITY
Infant mortality refers to the deaths of persons aged under twelve months. A high degree of caution should be exercised in regard to interpreting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander infant deaths data. In addition to the data quality issues that impact on Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander deaths data generally, data on infant mortality by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander status is subject to the high variability caused by small numbers. Infant mortality counts have been aggregated for the period of 2010-2014 to add robustness to otherwise small counts. See Explanatory Notes 57-66 for further information.
For 2010-2014, the infant mortality rate for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Australians was higher than that of non-Indigenous Australians (6.2 deaths per 1,000 compared with 3.5 deaths per 1,000). Of the 505 Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander infant deaths registered from 2010-2014, more than half of the deaths (51.9%, 262 deaths) were attributed to Certain conditions originating in the perinatal period (P00-P96), which is a similar proportion to that of the non-Indigenous population (50.9%, 1,801 deaths).
